  1. 1 cup Bengal Gram Dal
  2. 1 medium tomato (roughly chopped)
  3. 3-4 green chilli
  4. 1/2 tsp turmeric
  5. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  6. 1/2 small coconut
  7. 1 tbsp ginger paste / finely crushed
  8. 2 bay leaf,
  9. 1 dry red chilli
  10. as per taste Salt
  11. 2-3 tbsp mustard oil
  12. 1 tbsp ghee
  13. 1/4 tsp hing

Steps to make to make Coconut Dal

  1. Soak Dal overnight and then put to boil in pressure cooker by adding 500 ml water + salt + roughly chopped Tomatoes for 6-7 whistles.
  2. Chop coconut into small small pieces.
  3. Assemble all ingredients
  4. Fry cashews to golden yellow and keep aside.
  5. In moderately heated pan / kadhai, add 1 tbsp mustard and fry coconut pieces till golden brownish and keep aside.
  6. In same pan / kadhai, add oil, add cumin seeds + bay leaf + dry chilli and allow to crackle (for few seconds), then add ginger + green chilli + hing and sauté till golden brown.
  7. Now pour the boiled Dal + turmeric + salt, mix well and give 2-3 times boil. Water can be added at this stage if want loose gravy dal.
  8. Now add coconut pieces + cashews + ghee and mix well. Simmer for 3-4 minutes and Dal is ready.
  9. Serve this delicious Dal with steamed rice or Paratha / Puri.
