  1. 1/2 cup Toor Dal/Split Pigeon Pea/Arhar Dal
  2. 2 1/2 cup Water
  3. 3 tbsp Oil
  4. 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds
  5. 1/4 tsp Cumin Seeds
  6. 1/4 tsp Fennel Seeds
  7. As Required Asafoetida (Pinch)
  8. 3 Green Chillies
  9. 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  10. 2 Dry Red Chillies
  11. 1 tbsp Coriander Stems (Chopped)
  12. 1 Tomato (Chopped)
  13. As Per Taste Salt
  14. 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  15. 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  16. 1 tsp Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder
  17. 3 tbsp Coriander Leaves (Chopped)
  18. 1 tbsp Lemon Juice

Steps to make to make Toor Dal

  1. Firstly, wash the toor dal well until the water runs clear. To it add water and steam it until cooked. Alternatively, you can pressure cook the dal.
  2. Heat oil in a Kadai. Add mustard seeds and allow them to crackle. Add cumin seeds, fennel seeds, and asafoetida. Add the green chilies, curry leaves, dry red chilies, and coriander stems and saute.
  3. Next, add the chopped tomatoes and salt and cover, and cook till the tomatoes are soft.
  4. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and Kashmiri red chili powder and saute. Add the chopped coriander leaves and saute.
  5. Now add the steamed toor dal along with the water. Mix well and cook until it comes to a boil.
  6. Add lemon juice and mix.
  7. Delicious toor dal is ready. Serve it immediately with hot steamed rice.
